Downtown Kingston has always been regarded as a style destination and Beckford Street is carrying on that tradition. On this Street hair stylists and nail technicians are permitted to ply their trade on the sidewalk – there is even sign saying so.
Other persons conducting business on Downtown sidewalks are liable to be moved on by the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC).
Currently there are discussions with the KSAC to find a building for them to operate from although no location has yet been found, says Gary Robotham Commercial Services Manager at the Corporation.
When Go-Local Jamaica visited last week several women were having their hair and nails prepared for Graduation ceremonies and parties.
As the sign on Beckford Street states hair stylists and nail technicians are permitted to operate on the sidewalk. The Street is known as the latest place for the latest styles, which soon migrate with their customers across Kingston and St. Andrew.
The stylists and technicians themselves were reluctant to speak out claiming police harass them regardless of their special status. “Wi cyaan survive thru di police dem,” plea the women in unison at treatment, which they say includes preventing them attracting customers from neighbouring Princes Street.
Vendors do not have similar permission from the KSAC and Go-Local witnessed several hurriedly gather up their wares when a police patrol car approached.
Many of the stylists and technicians are supporting up to three or four children, explains a male vendor. And for the time being at least customers can still be beautified Beckford Street-style.
