Twenty-five students from the Victoria and Grants Pen Cyber Club, the Marverley Life Care and Home Work Centre and the Jamaica Foundation for Children (JFC) participated in a free web-development training workshop provided by Cable & Wireless Jamaica Foundation (CWJF) from August 9 – 15.

Thirteen of these students participated from the Container Project in Palmers Cross, Clarendon and the Cable & Wireless Jamaica Foundation (CWJF) Cyber Club in Marverley via Internet video streaming. Students ranged in age from 16 to 23.

“The Internet streaming was really interactive, the students felt as if they were in a classroom at Cable & Wireless,” said Container Project Director, Mervin Jarman. MSN Messenger and cell phones were used for further communication between the students at the different sites and the workshop presenters.

The training course exposed the participants to basic web development techniques, graphic design, web hosting, storyboarding (a visual map that displays how web pages are linked together), and web protocols (how two internet capable devices communicate).

Danielle Piper, a representative from Jamaica Foundation for Children said although an information technology student, she learnt a lot using kompZer (an open source software used to build websites) and Photoshop (a photo editing an graphic design software).

Ann-Marie Astwood, the Foundations Manager said Cable & Wireless, “decided to use free software so they can continue working on their web skills after the training has ended.”

“It’s almost as if I am starting my career early,” said Laranzo Dacres who wants to be a computer engineer and web designer.

“The computer plays an important part in my life as I do a lot of computer courses at school. I am happy to now learn about web page design,” said Kerry Blake a student at the University of Technology (Utech), who participated in the training from Marverley.

CWJF is also giving a trainer from each group a tutorial CD to help train other members of the community organisations.
