Flash flood warning extended, ODPEM

Hevay rains associated with Tropical Storm Noel (now a Hurricane) continues to flood the island. The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) at 4:15pm today has advised that the flash flood warning is still in effect  for all parishes.

Motorist are being reminded that the Bog Walk Gorge is closed and are encouraged to use Sligoville and Barry as alternate routes. The public is also urged to avoid this potentially dangerous area.

A section of Benny Pen, a tributary of the Wag Water River in the vicinity of Temple Hall, has broken away. Residents in the houses along the river are being advised to evacuate to safer areas immediately.

 

The Roberts Field bridge in Mavis Bank, St. Andrew is now inundated. The Kingston & St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) is at present clearing the debris from the road so the community can be accessed. 

 

The Georgia fording in St. Thomas, is partially cut off. The ODPEM prefer if motorists do not travel via this route. However, motorists who need to access this area are being advised to proceed travelling via this route with great caution.

St. Thomas now has now access to Portland via the Hordley Crossing Route.

Food airlifts have been scheduled for later today at Mount Vernon for the communities of Mount Vernon, Moffat and Jones Pen. Food lift is also scheduled for Johnson Mountain to provide food for Johnson Mountain and Spring Back.

OTHER REPORTS ISSUED BY ODPEM AT 11AM TODAY:

St. Thomas

 

§         Weisse Road in Nine Miles, Bull Bay: 6 houses flooded out as the Chalky River has overflowed its banks. The National Works Agency (NWA) is now responding to the situation. They are trying to train a section of the river to prevent further flooding to the other houses located close to the riverbank.

§         The main road leading to Cedar Valley, in the vicinity of Newmonklands, has broken away. The alternative route from Bethel to Llandewey, is blocked by landslides and is also impassable.

§         Other isolated communities in St. Thomas include Hagley Gap, Mount Lebanus, Mount Vernon, Moffat,  Jones Pen and  Georgia

 

St. Andrew

 

·        The community of Westphalia is currently isolated

 

Clarendon

 

·        The Alley Bridge in southwest Clarendon is currently impassable. The main road is impassable.

·        The Portland Cottage main road is impassable as a result of the roads being flooded by water

 

 The public is advised to continue monitoring the radio for further advisories and to avoid areas that are at risk from flooding and landslides.

TIPS from ODPEM:

§         Be ready to evacuate if you live in low-lying or flood-prone areas. Decide on likely evacuation routes now. Plan to stay with family or friends in safer areas or in a public shelter and move to safety.

§         Avoid flooded waterways, gullies, streams or rivers, either on foot or in vehicles.

§         Move your refrigerator, stove and furniture to a higher floor, or place them on building blocks and secure to the wall.

§         Do not walk outside barefooted during or after the flood event.

§         Bury all dead animals right after flooding has subsided.
